December 20, 2019: So, this will be my first attempt at writing a blog, and I want to reflect on the last 3 years – a wonderful 3 year journey with my sisters! As many of you know, we started 3 Sisters in memory of my stepdaughter, Nici. She is with us every day, and her heart and soul go into every stitch we complete. It makes my heart happy to know that we are making a difference in people’s lives in Nici’s memory.
There are certain donations and conversations that stand out – I want to talk about those – as they are the life-defining moments that we don’t expect, but wow, do they pack a punch!
I was delivering an order to a woman who works in a mortuary. As I was showing her the ponchos, and explaining how the ponchos work, she stated, “You know, I’m on the receiving end of those who don’t buckle their kids in correctly. They’re in a hurry, they’re only going a few blocks. Unfortunately, some of them end up here.” At that point in time, I was bawling – that seems to happen a lot more as I get older, and I can thank my mom for giving me those genes :), LIFE-DEFINING MOMENT…and Nici was sitting on my shoulder. I knew that 3 Sisters was meant to be.
We often do Random Acts of Kindness (RAKs) when we are out and about. I am always taken aback when individuals are shocked that we are gifting them an item and expect nothing in return. Times like this give us the opportunity to remind people of the importance of helping others and paying it forward. There are always hugs, and many times, tears during these brief encounters!
An order of beanies was donated to a mental health center for kids. One of the boys said, “Is this really for me? I’ve never had anything that hasn’t been worn before.” Be still my heart.
We made and donated lap blankets to Northridge Village over a year ago (and actually had some of the residents help us make the blankets). To this day, when we visit our mom there, we see many of the residents still using their blankets in the dining room. AND, many of them still remember that we are the ones that gave them the lap blankets. It’s the small things that make a difference! We received a beautiful email from the wife of one of the residents, stating that he had passed away. Before he passed, he told her that he wanted 3 Sisters to receive part of his memorial funds so we could continue our mission. Yep, more tears!
Making our monthly donations of medical treatment wraps to Denver Health, I am able to witness the difference that we can make in people’s lives. As I hand out the wraps to individuals going through chemotherapy and other medical treatments, I am reminded that we are all fragile, but through the fragility, we can find strength. I don’t think I’ve ever met individuals as strong as those fighting cancer and other terminal illnesses. I’m so humbled to help in even the smallest way.
So why do we do what we do? We are determined to soften the world that has become hardened. We want to pay it forward as we count our blessings every day. We know that if we impact one person, that impact will spread like the roots of a tree.
So there you have it, first blog done. We will update this blog on a semi-regular basis – stay tuned for our next blog – “A Year in Review”. We are excited to give you a recap of 2019!
Hugs to you all, and remember…Just Bee!
